To track AI search traffic, look in Google Analytics 4 for referral traffic from AI tools such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, group them into a custom channel, and check Search Console for Google clicks. Some AI visits arrive with no referrer, so also check your branded searches and ask new customers how they found you.
How to track AI search traffic
Step 1: Find AI referrals in GA4
In Google Analytics 4, open the traffic acquisition report and view the session source or medium. Look for referrers from AI tools, for example chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. The exact names change over time, so review the list of referral sources now and then.
Step 2: Group them into a custom channel
Create a custom channel group with a rule that matches those sources, so AI traffic shows up as its own line in your reports instead of being buried in general referrals. Keep the list of matched sources up to date.
Step 3: Watch Google clicks in Search Console
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are included in Search Console's Google search clicks and are not reported separately, so use clicks as your main measure of Google search performance, and compare against the same period last year. See the complete guide for how this fits into a measurement routine.
Step 4: Check branded searches
People who hear about you from an AI tool often search for your name afterwards. A rise in branded search clicks in Search Console can be a sign of AI visibility, though it is only an indicator. One of our case studies was led by growth in searches for the business's own name.
Step 5: Ask and test
Add "How did you find us?" to your enquiry form with an AI assistant as an option, and occasionally ask the major AI tools your key customer questions to see whether and how they mention you. Record the results over time.
Know the limits
Some AI visits arrive without referrer information, so they appear as direct traffic. Numbers will be incomplete, and AI answers vary from one person and one day to the next. Use these methods to see the trend, not a precise total. To improve your chances of being cited, see how to get cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
Can I see AI Overviews clicks separately in Search Console?
No. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted within Google search clicks and are not broken out as a separate report.
Why is some AI traffic showing as direct?
Some AI tools and apps do not pass referrer information, so GA4 cannot tell where the visit came from and records it as direct.
Is AI search traffic worth tracking if it is small?
Yes. It is a growing source, and it is easier to understand your baseline now than later. Keep an eye on the trend and lead quality, not only the volume.
